Symbollon Announces Publication of Article Identifying IoGen as a Possible Breast Cancer Preventative
Symbollon Pharmaceuticals, Inc.(NASDAQ-OTCBB:SYMBA) (OTC BB: SYMBA) today announced that it has received notification that the article authored by Dr. Jack H. Kessler, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of Symbollon Pharmaceuticals titled The Effect of Supaphysiological Levels of Iodine on Patients with Cyclic Mastalgia will be published in the July 2004 edition of The Breast Journal. The Breast Journal (Blackwell Publishing) is the office journal of The American Society of Breast Disease, The International Society of Breast Pathology and The Senologic International Society. The article details the connection between the use of iodine and breast cancer prevention.
Dr. Kessler noted, "The association of breast cancer with iodine intake has long been a topic of discussion in the scientific literature. A variety of epidemiologic and clinical observations led Bruce Stadel, MD, MPH, to suggest the use of iodine in chemoprevention trials to reduce the risk of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancer. The primary organ concerning iodine intake is the thyroid. When the thyroid is exposed to elevated levels of iodine the enzyme peroxidase triggers an 'auto regulatory effect' by synthesizing antiproliferative iodinated arachidonic acid derivatives, instead of thyroid hormones. Breast tissue also contains the enzyme peroxidase."
Dr. Kessler continued, "Observations by Professor Nancy Carrasco, MD, of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine noted that 80% of human breast cancer samples expressed the protein responsible for iodine uptake (the sodium/iodide symporter). These observations indicate that cancerous breast tissue can concentrate iodine and that peroxidase in breast tissue should synthesize the same antiproliferative iodinated arachidonic acid derivatives when exposed to elevated levels of iodine. We plan to conduct experiments as part of our next trials that will allow us to identify whether these iodolipids are present in the breast duct fluid of patients on IoGen, a late-stage compound being developed by Symbollon Pharmaceuticals. Such an observation would provide the first direct experimental data in support of a discrete mechanism that could explain the physiologic effect of iodine on breast tissue and provide support for further investigation of the use of iodine as a breast cancer preventative for women with fibrocystic breasts."
Symbollon Pharmaceuticals, Inc.(NASDAQ-OTCBB:SYMBA) is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of proprietary drugs based on its molecular iodine technology. Symbollon already has completed Phase I and II clinical trials evaluating IoGen as a potential treatment for moderate to severe cyclic pain and tenderness (clinical mastalgia) associated with fibrocystic breast disease (FBD). FBD is a condition that affects about 24 million women in the U.S., with approximately 7 million of these women suffering from clinical cyclic mastalgia. The Company believes IoGen also may be useful in treating and/or preventing endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and premenopausal breast cancer.
